Shantel Mugwagwa

A seven-year-old girl who deserves the chance to learn

Grade 1 · Chamukwenjera Primary School · Chivhu, Zimbabwe

Shantel is seven years old and has just started her education in Grade 1 at Chamukwenjera Primary School.

She lives with her mother and her two siblings, Ian and Fatima. The three children have different fathers. Shantel has never met her father.

A family doing what it can

The family has very limited financial means. Shantel’s older brother Ian is already doing what he can to help. He works at someone’s home, doing various household jobs and odd tasks. He does not receive a regular wage. In return for his work, the family he works for pays his school fees.

It is a striking example of how difficult circumstances can affect the whole family; even the children are already having to find ways to contribute.

For Shantel, we want something different.

At seven years old, she should have the chance to go to school, learn, play and discover what she is capable of, without her family’s financial situation preventing her from doing so.

Because this is Shantel’s first year to do exams at school, there is not yet enough information to say how she is performing academically.

What is clear is that she deserves the opportunity to continue that journey.

€150 can give Shantel a full year of education.

She is only at the beginning of her school journey.

With the right support, we can help make sure that her first steps into education are not her last.
